Source Material

Print/Publication, Installation, Exhibition Design
Source Material is a student-led publication at ArtCenter College of Design dedicated to showcasing work that celebrates multidisciplinary collaboration and challenges traditional, institutionalized design.

Issue 04: Faces︎︎︎
Building on the tradition of the self-portrait, Source Material aimed to inspire the ArtCenter community to delve into their perceptions of themselves and others. The fourth issue, Faces, presents a collection of portraits, literal or otherwise, as well as poems, and prompts that document the unique ways in which identities materialize, transform, and interact in relation to one another.

The issue 04 release event included an installation that held 500 copies of the publication, packaged in metallic mailers, and an activity wall, inviting visitors to sketch out the characteristics they see in themselves and friends.

Issue 03: Safe Spaces︎︎︎
Safe Spaces invites readers to take a glimpse into the shared and authentic moments of what a safe space may mean to others. This issue explores the concept of any safe space, whether digital or physical, person or place.

To develop the narrative of the book, the editorial team planned in-person workshops held by SM. We asked attendees five questions about their safe spaces and used those leading points to organize the content throughout the book.

For issue 03, I assisted with concept development, designing and packaging the publication, and event installation setup.

The editorial team packaged 600 copies of the publication in a frosted mailer with a laser-cut acrylic keychain designed by Editor Aldon Chen. These publications were given out to attendees at the Safe Spaces release event.

Summer Series: From—Memory︎︎︎
Based on summer memories, this issue explores how artifacts can be experienced non-traditionally. We created a 365-page, perfect-bound one-off, each page uniquely designed with summer memories.

By encouraging individuals to rip a page at the event, it demonstrated that just like memories and time, fleeting and special to an individual, participants belong to this very experience.

I designed the slip cover digitally, which we printed on vellum, and the text was painted in white by Editor Rebecca Brown.

The artworks showcased in this issue were created by student and alumni attendees of our summer workshops, which were then collaged together by the SM editors. The typefaces used throughout the issue were also designed by the student community.

The print-takeaway was positioned on a pedestal, surrounded by poster panels. This encouraged participants to surround the singular artifact or “moment,” and witness each others’ experience of tearing a page.
